Tanky DPS – The dominant force

My current League of Legends champion suggestion is taking a long time, that’s a given. With that suggestion, I’m trying to put together an extremely polished and well-thought-out solution to the problem of easy, boring tank champions. However, in the overall metagame of League of Legends, there is a much more pressing need.

Tanky DPS champions are not just the Flavour-of-the-Month, but the past year. It doesn’t help that Riot is releasing Tanky DPS champions left, right and centre too. There was a post made on the EU forums entitled How to counter a team full of bruisers?

.

Not playing ranked so there is no chance of counter picking.

Enemy had Renekton, Maokai, Sion, Nunu and Jarvan. There is nothing we can do against them.

.

If you’ve also been on the receiving end of a team like that, you’ll know how difficult it is. Even with multiple AD carries and Madred’s Bloodrazor (everyone’s stock response to counter tanky DPS), you’re going to have a tough time with that lot. The response by Riot staff member, RiotSamm, was as follows:

.

The best way to counter a team full of bruisers is a team full champions who can kite as well as have good map awareness. Because bruisers can usually battle in melee range, having champions that can stay away from that range can greatly increase your chance of winning.

Having champions like Teemo(Mushrooms), Shaco(Jack in the Box), Heimer(Turrets), and other trap/ward champions provide good map awareness to prevent intense team fights.

Other Champions such as Ashe(Volley/Enchanted Crystal Arrow), Janna(Howling Gale/Monsoon), Trundle(Pillar of Faith), Anivia(Ice Wall/Flash Frost) and other kite champions can effectively kite and keep enemy bruisers away and/or isolate them to pick them off.

The best thing to do is avoid team fights until they are low from being kited for so long or if one of them needs to go back. This requires a bit more team work but this is probably the best counter for a team full of bruisers. Please let me know if this helped you out

This response highlights exactly how overpowered Tanky DPS is, in case you were doubting it. The counters he mentions are just ludicrous in the current game of LoL.

Kiting in League of Legends is generally quite tricky. In small skirmishes it’s definitely possible, but with the amount of bushes, ambush points, speed increases and CC, it’s very very difficult to kite for any length of time. Summoner spells are the worst offenders, no-one can kite a Flash+CC. In a massive team fight, a tanky DPS team can just charge the enemy AD carry, tanking the hits all the way, and then focus fire them down. In reverse, it’s very difficult for another team to pick which identi-kit tanky DPS to focus. The only way you can defeat them is focusing one at a time… but when there are 3+ equally tanky fat DPS machines running up on your carry… it’s easier said than done. There are very few champions designed to kite and be tanky enough to withstand the focus fire and permanent CC of multiple tanky DPS champs. All 5 of those above champions have some form of single target stun and, unless you have Janna or Gragas in your team, it’s impossible to protect your damage dealers from the chain stunning.

Saying “Avoid team fights” is completely ridiculous. Tanky DPS can force team fights, they just need to push a tower down. They’re so tanky that it’s no problem for one of them to just tank the tower, while the others rip it to shreds. LoL games will always have team fights and a team fight can decide an entire game… so “avoid team fights” is bad overall advice. BUT, being able to reset a fight (like Janna or Gragas can do), is a pretty important ability.

Renekton, the current king of Tanky DPS

It’s the combination of not being able to kite and not being able to avoid team fights that makes tanky DPS so strong. You can’t pick off tanks… they just take the harassment on the chin. Even if you can reset the fight, you won’t be killing any of them any time soon. If you could kite, then team fights would start as 5v4s. If you could avoid team fights then you could run the enemy team around the map. The problem is that you can’t kite long enough to avoid a team fight.

While there is no real counter for Tanky DPS in the current game, perhaps a new champion could solve it. In a much more streamlined process, I will start working on a new champion suggestion for someone who could defeat the tanky DPS metagame. I want them to be able to counter tanks and bruisers with ease, but fall short to other enemies (otherwise they’d be horrendously OP). This is a much more specific challenge than ‘Make-a-tank’, so it should be much quicker!

What would a champion need to defeat a Tanky DPS?

  • Kiting ability – Bruisers are all melee, so some way to keep them away from you is a good start. Having a skill which enables you to kite a whole team is definitely worth thinking about.
  • Direct HP damage – Either something which reduces enemy resistances, deals true damage or deals damage based on the max HP of the enemy. The only way to bring down these juggernaughts is to have some modifier which lets you circumvent their defences.
  • Focus/Isolation – An ability which focuses your team’s damage on a single target. Marking an enemy is sometimes effective, but there could be a way to force damage onto a single target.
  • Anti-CC – This champ will need some way to prevent themselves being CC’d into oblivion by the stuns that every tanky DPS champion has. This could be a form of immunity or cleanse, or it could be indirect and linked to the kiting a counter CC.

So there are some things to think about. I’ve had hints of an idea for a cool gun-toting champion before, and I’d like to try a new power mechanic (rather than the standard mana/energy/rage I talked about last week). I’m thinking reloading in some form… everyone likes badass reloading animations.
