LoL Tank Update – Draft Concept Art

Thought I’d update people on the status of my LoL tank design. Been quite busy, especially as Riot just released a new tank and I wanted to see if anything has improved! Unfortunately, I had to earn 6300IP (and you get about 100 per win, and each game lasts around 40 mins) and Maokai is rather underwhelming after 3-4 days playing him. So a pain in the ass on both counts, and creating my LoL tank aesthetic has suffered.

I drew my champion on paper and then scanned it into the computer. I was going to colour and shade it using a graphics package. It’s taken a while, and it’s criminally boring! In case anyone is following this project, I thought I should include the original drawing while I finish up the sexy coloured version.

My first drawing and draft of my female champion's aesthetic.

I’ve tried to incorporate as much as possible from my checklist, as well as including her weapon selection. The long gown I decided to use is based on a ‘Chiton’, a robe from the Greek period. The picture I used as inspiration is below. Chitons seem to vary quite a lot, with some of them being flowing and cumbersome, and others, like the one I used, which are more of a simple style. The style that I chose leave the open leg on the right hand side, this works nicely to exaggerate the length of her legs and also frees it up for movement (the charge style ultimate’s animation) and gives me more room for any sort of war paint, should I choose to put some on the leg.

While I am still going for a realistic looking champion (i.e. one that doesn’t look like a child or a porn star), the design so far is definitely not as butch as I thought it would be. There is definitely some obvious physical strength, which I want to portray, with the bare arms emphasizing that. As I do want this to be a viable champion, I can’t make some really manly looking testosterone pumped freak of nature… no-one would buy her. So, while she is going to have considerable physical strength, it’s going to be more of an Olympic sprinter style tone, rather than female bodybuilding.

Overall it’s a simple design at this current stage. She has 3 magical weapons (which will probably have cool particle effects) and her broken bonds to give her a bit of aesthetic flair;  the rest is going to be as simple as possible. I will include some rune designs on the front of her Chiton, which will link to her back story, but overall she will have quite plain clothing. With 3 stances, it’s important to make it easy to understand exactly what weapon you are currently using. There is enough visual clutter in LoL already, so the focus of my champion’s look will definitely draw the eye to her weaponry. As a tank, it’s often hard to tell what’s happening to you in the middle of an enemy team.

So that’s the update. I hope to get the whole thing at simply shaded and coloured soon. After that, I can work on real fiddly bits like her face, the detail on her girdle and the effects on her weapons.
